How steep is every dog ramp at a real bed, SUV and truck?
We worked out the angle of all 23 dog ramps we compare from their listed lengths. At a 30-inch SUV cargo floor, none is gentle (18° or less). A ramp needs to be about 97 inches long for that, and the typical ramp is 71 inches, about 25° there. Indoors, 19 of 23 are gentle at an 18-inch couch.
Ramp boxes list a length and a weight rating. Only 1 of the 23 ramps we compare lists an angle. So we worked out how steep every one of them is at four heights a dog commonly climbs: an 18-inch couch, a 24-inch bed, a 30-inch SUV cargo floor and a 34-inch pickup tailgate.
What we found
- At a 30-inch SUV cargo floor, none of the 23 ramps is gentle (18° or less). To get there, a ramp needs to be about 97 inches long. The longest ramp we list is 96 inches.
- At a 34-inch tailgate, 16 of 23 sit steeper than 26°, past every band we use. A gentle slope there takes a ramp about 110 inches long, over 9 feet.
- The typical (median) ramp is 71 inches long. That's about 20° at a bed, 25° at an SUV and 29° at a tailgate.
- Of the 18 ramps sold for cars, 7 come out moderate (22° or less) at a 30-inch cargo floor. All of them are 82 inches or longer.
- Indoors it's a different story: 19 of 23 are gentle at an 18-inch couch, and 7 at a 24-inch bed.
How we checked
We used every ramp we compare: 23 in all, sold for cars, for beds and couches, or both. For each one we took the full length the maker or seller lists, then worked out the angle at each height with the same right-triangle math a builder uses: the angle is the arcsine of height divided by length. Telescoping ramps are measured at their longest.
That gives each ramp its best case. In real use, the top of a ramp rests on the bed or cargo floor and the bottom rests on the ground, so the part your dog walks is a little shorter and the slope a little steeper. The one maker that lists an angle, Pet Classics, gives 22° for its 24-inch ramp. Our full-length math gives about 19°. The listing doesn't say how it measured.
The heights are the ones we use across our ramp pages, not measurements of any one couch, bed or vehicle. Yours will differ, so measure straight up from the ground to where your dog steps on. Our ramp angle calculator works out any height and length.
Our gentle (18° or less), moderate (up to 22°) and steeper (up to 26°) bands are our own guide for comparing ramps, not veterinary advice. We haven't found a vet school or veterinary group that publishes a single safe angle for dogs. Ask your vet what suits your dog.
All lengths come from the makers' and sellers' own listings, checked October 2026. We haven't measured these ramps ourselves. If a listing changes or we got a number wrong, tell us and we'll fix it.

What it means if you're buying
For a bed or couch, most ramps on our list come out gentle or moderate, so you can choose on width, grip and side rails. For an SUV or truck, length matters more than anything else on the box. Measure your cargo floor or tailgate, then check the angle at that height on our ramps page, which shows it for every ramp. If even the longest ramp is too steep for your dog, steps or a lift harness may suit better. Your vet can help you decide.

Questions people ask
What angle is a typical dog ramp?
It depends on the height. The typical ramp on our list is 71 inches long. That's about 20° at a 24-inch bed, 25° at a 30-inch SUV cargo floor and 29° at a 34-inch tailgate. Our bands (gentle up to 18°, moderate up to 22°, steeper up to 26°) are our own guide, not veterinary advice.
How long should a dog ramp be for an SUV?
For an 18° slope at a 30-inch cargo floor, about 97 inches. For 22°, about 80 inches. Only 7 of the 18 car ramps we compare come out at 22° or less there, and all of them are 82 inches or longer.
Why don't dog ramp makers list the angle?
The angle changes with the height you use the ramp at, so one number wouldn't fit everyone. Only 1 of the 23 ramps we compare lists one. You can work it out yourself with our ramp angle calculator.
