Lift harness vs sling vs towel

A towel is a free stopgap but has no handles and can slip. A support sling has handles and holds up the back end while you help. A lift harness is fitted, has handles on the upper back, and some can stay on all day. Ask your vet which suits your dog.

Woman walking her dog down a dirt road

When your dog's back legs get weak, you can help by taking some of their weight. A towel, a sling and a lift harness all do that. They differ in how much they hold, how easy they are to grip and how long they can stay on.

A towel

A towel is something you already have, so it costs nothing to try. It has no handles or straps, though, so it can slip, and it gives no support at the front. We haven't found a vet school source on using towels. Ask your vet whether it's safe for your dog.

A support sling

A sling goes under the belly or the hips and has handles, so you can lift the back end with a straight grip. The Dog Aging Project describes these as temporary aids that only support the hind end. Slings we compare include the Labra Dog Support Sling, the Loobani Back Legs Sling, the Walkabout Walkabelly and the Walkin' Up-n-Go Rear Support Leash. See their sizes.

A lift harness

A lift harness is fitted to your dog and has handles that rise from the upper back. Tufts' veterinary school notes the handles give you an easy grip when helping your dog get up or walk. Some, such as the PetSafe CareLift, can be worn full-time. The Dog Aging Project says this kind takes a little more effort to put on but can be left on. Full-body harnesses we list include the Help 'Em Up Harness, the OneTigris and the NeoAlly.

For more on types and sizing, see choosing a lift harness.

Ask your vet first

Back-leg weakness has many causes, and each may need a different kind of support. Tufts advises asking your vet which type of harness suits your dog.
