How steep will your dog ramp be?

A ramp's angle depends on two numbers: the height your dog climbs and the ramp's length. At a 24-inch bed, a 70-inch ramp sits at about 20°. At a 30-inch SUV cargo floor, the same ramp sits at about 25°, and you'd need a ramp about 97 inches long to get down to 18°.

Ramp makers list length and weight rating. Almost none say how steep the ramp will be at your bed, couch or tailgate. You can work it out from two numbers: how high your dog climbs and how long the ramp is.

Work out your ramp's angle

How to measure the height

Measure straight up from the floor or ground to the surface your dog steps onto. That's the top of the mattress, the couch cushion or the floor of the cargo area, not the bed frame or the bumper. Do it with the car parked where you usually load your dog, since a slope in the driveway changes the number.

For a ramp that sits on a bed or couch, use the full length of the ramp. For a car ramp, some of the ramp rests on the cargo floor or bumper, so the part your dog actually walks is a little shorter. That makes the real angle a little steeper than the calculator shows.

Our angle guide

BandAngleWhat it means
Gentle18° or lessThe flattest ramps we list. A good place to start for a dog that's unsure or stiff.
ModerateUp to 22°A middle ground. Worth checking against your dog and your space.
SteeperUp to 26°The steepest band we list. Past 26°, we show the angle but don't call it a band.

These bands are our own guide for comparing ramps, not veterinary advice. We haven't found a vet school or veterinary group that publishes a single safe angle for dogs, and the right slope depends on your dog. Ask your vet what's right for yours, especially after surgery or if your dog has arthritis or a spine problem.

Why most car ramps end up steep

The math is the problem, not the dog. At a 30-inch SUV cargo floor, a 70-inch ramp sits at about 25°. To get down to 18° at that height you'd need a ramp close to 100 inches long, and most folding car ramps are about 60 to 72 inches. That's why a dog that walks up a bed ramp can still balk at the car.

A few ramps go longer, including some 7 and 8 ft aluminum folding ramps. If you load into a high SUV or a truck, length matters more than anything else on the box. See ramps at a 30-inch cargo floor.

What the box says

When a maker gives a height range, such as "fits beds from 20 to 35 inches," check the angle at the top of that range. A 70-inch ramp that reaches a 35-inch bed is sitting at about 30° there. It reaches, but that doesn't make it gentle.

Questions people ask

How steep should a dog ramp be?

There's no single published safe angle for dogs. We sort ramps into gentle (18° or less), moderate (up to 22°) and steeper (up to 26°) to make them easier to compare. Those bands are our own guide, not veterinary advice. Ask your vet what suits your dog.

How long should a dog ramp be for an SUV?

For a 30-inch cargo floor, a ramp needs to be about 97 inches long for an 18° slope and about 80 inches for 22°. Most folding car ramps are 60 to 72 inches, which works out to roughly 25° to 30° at that height.

How do I measure for a dog ramp?

Measure straight up from the floor or ground to the surface your dog steps onto: the top of the mattress, the couch cushion or the cargo floor. Measure with the car parked where you usually load your dog.
