Before you choose

The Center for Pet Safety has not certified any booster seat, hammock or bridge. These help with comfort and getting settled, not crash protection.

Questions people ask

Are any of these car seats, hammocks or bridges crash-tested?

None of the seats, hammocks or bridges listed here appears on the Center for Pet Safety certified list, which shows only carriers and kennels. In the 2015 Center for Pet Safety seat pilot study, all four seats tested failed in some way, including the Kurgo Skybox. These products are for comfort and keeping seats clean, not crash protection. For crash protection, look for a CPS-certified carrier or crate.

What is the difference between a booster, a hammock and a bridge?

A booster seat is a raised box for a small dog (most listed here are for dogs up to about 25-34 lb). A hammock hangs between the front and back headrests to cover the seat and block the footwell. A bridge or hard-bottom extender is a firm platform over the footwell, giving a bigger flat surface for a larger dog.

Will a bridge fit my car?

Measure from the back of the back seat to the seat edge and the gap to the front seats. Kurgo, for example, says its Rover Backseat Bridge is not recommended for gaps over 13 inches. Check each maker's stated limits before buying.

How can I help a stiff older dog get into the car?

VCA Animal Hospitals says a ramp for getting into and out of vehicles can reduce stress on the back and leg joints. Lifting a heavy dog can strain you both, so ask your vet about the safest way for your dog.
