Lift and support harnesses

By the Gray Muzzle Gear team

Lift harnesses let you take some of your dog's weight on stairs, in and out of the car and on walks. Rear harnesses support the back legs; full-body harnesses add a front handle. We list every size separately and match it to your dog's weight or girth.

Sizing

Makers size these by weight, by girth or both. Measure girth around the deepest part of the chest, just behind the front legs. For rear slings, some makers mean the waist in front of the back legs instead; each product page says which.

Questions people ask

Rear or full-body lift harness?

A rear harness or sling supports the back end, which suits a dog whose back legs are weak. A full-body harness adds support at the chest, for a dog who needs help front and back. Your vet can help you choose.

How do I measure my dog for a lift harness?

Makers size by weight, by chest or belly girth, or by leg girth. Measure your dog with a soft tape and compare it with that maker's chart before you order. We note which measurement each maker uses.

Sling or lift harness: which do I need?

A sling supports the back end for short stretches. A lift harness is fitted and has handles on the upper back. See harness vs sling vs towel, and ask your vet.

Can a dog wear a lift harness all day?

Some are made for it. Tufts notes the PetSafe CareLift can be worn full-time, and the Dog Aging Project says stay-on harnesses take more effort to put on. Ask your vet if your dog will wear one for long.

Do male and female dogs need different rear harnesses?

Some rear harnesses come in male and female versions, so the strap sits in the right place. Check the maker's page before you order.
