Dog stairs for high beds
None of the bed steps on our list reach 30 inches; the tallest is 25 inches. Measure your bed, check the rise per step and the weight limit, and consider a ramp: at 30 inches, a gentle 18° slope needs about 8.1 ft. The angle bands are our own guide, not veterinary advice.
Many beds sit 30 inches or higher off the floor, so measure yours from the floor to the top of the mattress. Most dog steps are shorter than that, so a tall bed takes a little more planning.
What's on our list
None of the bed and couch steps on our list reach 30 inches. The tallest are:
| Steps | Height | Maker's weight limit |
|---|---|---|
| PetSafe CozyUp Folding Pet Steps (25 inches) | 25 inches | 200 lb |
| Zinus Easy Pet Stairs, X-Large | 24 inches (6 inches per step) | Not stated |
| Pet Gear Free-Standing Foldable Pet Stair | 23 inches | 350 lb |
The Pet Loader XL is sold in 3 to 6 step setups, and the maker lists the 5-step setup for 30 to 40 inches. It is listed for cars, so check with the maker that it suits a bed. Compare steps by height.
What to check
- Top height. Steps a few inches below the mattress leave one last hop. Ask your vet if that is OK for your dog.
- Rise per step. Shorter steps are easier to climb. Our list shows it when the maker does.
- Grip and weight limit. Pick a non-slip tread and a limit above your dog's weight.
A ramp is another option
A ramp avoids lifting each leg, but at bed height it needs room. Here is the length for each of our own angle bands (our own guide, not veterinary advice):
| Bed height | Gentle (18°) | Moderate (22°) | Steeper (26°) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 30 inches | 8.1 ft | 6.7 ft | 5.7 ft |
| 34 inches | 9.2 ft | 7.6 ft | 6.5 ft |
On our list, the DoggoRamps Large Bed Ramp is 70 inches long and the maker says it fits beds 20 to 35 inches. At 30 inches that works out to about 25.4°. See ramp vs steps or use the ramp angle calculator.
Practice first
New steps take getting used to. Reward your dog for each step, and go slowly at first.

Questions people ask
How tall should dog stairs be for a high bed?

Are there dog steps for a 30-inch bed?
None of the bed and couch steps on our list reach 30 inches. The tallest is 25 inches. The Pet Loader XL's 5-step setup is listed by the maker for 30 to 40 inches, for cars.
Is a ramp better than stairs for a high bed?
A ramp avoids lifting each leg but needs room: about 8.1 ft for a gentle 18° slope at 30 inches. Your vet can help you decide which suits your dog.
