Boots vs grip socks vs toe grips (and paw wax)
Toe grips fit over the nails and leave the paw pads bare. Grip socks and boots cover the whole paw, and socks can twist so the grip ends up on top. Paw coatings go on the pads. Start with short nails, and if slipping is new, ask your vet.
If your older dog slips on hardwood or tile, there are four main things you can put on their feet. Each one adds grip in a different way. Some dogs do better with one than another, and you can try more than one.
First, check the nails
Before you buy anything, look at your dog's nails. The Dog Aging Project says short nails are essential for a dog to use their own paw pads for grip. It suggests a routine trim every 3 to 4 weeks. If trimming is hard, ask your vet for help.
The short version
| Toe grips | Grip socks | Boots | Paw coatings | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | Rubber rings that slip over the nails | Socks with rubber grips on the bottom | Boots with a rubber sole | A kit or spray put on the paw pads |
| Covers the paw? | No | Yes | Yes | No |
| Worth knowing | Not ideal for a dog who chews | Can twist so the grip ends up on top | Some packs hold only 2 | Follow the maker's directions for reapplying |
| How they're sized | By toenail size | By paw width or length | By paw size | By dog weight, for some kits |
Toe grips
Toe grips go around the nails and leave the paw pads bare. The Dog Aging Project warns to be careful with them if your dog is a chewer. Dr. Buzby's ToeGrips come 20 to a pack and are sized by toenail size, not by weight.
Grip socks
Socks cover the whole paw and are easy to take off at night. The Dog Aging Project notes they can twist on the paw so the grip is no longer underneath. Check the pack count: DOK TigerToes and Pet Life socks come 4 to a pack, but YOULY socks come 2 to a pack, so you'd need two packs for four paws.
Boots
Boots have a full rubber sole. The Dog Aging Project lists rubber gripping booties as one option for slick floors. Reddy boots come 2 to a pack. The HEALERS Urban Walker III is sold as a set, but the pack count isn't clear on the page, so check before you order.
Paw coatings
These go on the paw pads instead of over them. The Pawtology PawFriction Kit is a granule coating. Its maker says the standard kit is for senior dogs 55 lb or less, and the Large Dog Bundle is for dogs 60 lb or more. Bio-Groom Show Foot is a spray, and its maker says it helps prevent slipping on wood and tile.
If slipping is new
Gear helps with grip, but it doesn't fix weakness. If your dog has started slipping where they used to walk fine, or their back legs seem weak, ask your vet. Our traction list shows each product's size range and pack count side by side.

Questions people ask
Are dog socks or boots better for slippery floors?
Socks are softer and easy to take off, but they can twist on the paw. Boots have a full rubber sole. Which suits your dog depends on your dog. If slipping is new, ask your vet.
Do toe grips hurt dogs?
Toe grips sit on the nails, not the pads. The Dog Aging Project advises care if your dog is a chewer. Size them by toenail, and ask your vet if your dog seems uncomfortable.
How many dog socks come in a pack?
It varies. In our list, DOK TigerToes and Pet Life come 4 to a pack, and YOULY comes 2 to a pack. Check before you order so you have enough for four paws.
