Orthopedic dog beds

By the Gray Muzzle Gear team

Compare orthopedic dog beds by the weight they're made for, their style and size. Foam thickness and type are the maker's own figures.

Before you choose

Measure your dog lying stretched out, nose to base of tail, and add a few inches. A low entry height helps a dog with stiff hips step in instead of climbing. Foam thickness is the maker's own figure; we show it as listed.

Questions people ask

Does an older dog with stiff joints need an orthopedic bed?

Supportive bedding can make rest more comfortable. VCA Animal Hospitals suggests considering an orthopedic or memory foam bed for dogs with osteoarthritis, and AAHA says orthopedic or heated beds ease arthritic discomfort. A bed is a comfort aid, not a treatment, so ask your vet what your dog needs.

What size bed should I get?

Measure your dog from nose to the base of the tail while lying stretched out. Kuranda's sizing rule is bed length = dog length + 4 inches. Then check the weight limit where the seller lists one; many beds don't, and those show "Not listed".

Are heated dog beds safe?

Use only heated beds made for pets, and look for a stated safety listing such as MET or UL, a thermostat, and a protected cord. Veterinary Practice News (Phil Zeltzman, DVM, DACVS) warns that heating pads made for people should not be used on animals and that tissue can be damaged above 113°F. A dog that can't move off a warm pad easily should be watched. Ask your vet whether heat is right for your dog.

Where should the bed go?

Canine Arthritis Resources and Education advises putting the bed in a warm, non-drafty spot with non-slip flooring under and around it, and using a ramp or stairs if the dog sleeps on a high bed. VCA Animal Hospitals notes that cold, damp conditions may worsen stiffness. Your vet can suggest other home changes.

Is the foam really as thick as listed?

Not always. On Chewy, some reviewers of beds listed with 4 inches of foam report about 2 inches after unpacking. We show the seller's figure and note when buyers or pages disagree. We have not tested these beds ourselves.
