Dog ramps

By the Gray Muzzle Gear team

We work out each ramp's angle at the height you enter. Of the 18 car ramps we compare, 7 stay at 22° or less at a 30-inch SUV cargo floor, and none do at 36 inches. Longer ramps make gentler slopes, so start with the height and the length.

How we work out the angle

Measure from the floor or ground to the top surface your dog is climbing onto: the mattress, the couch seat or the cargo floor. Enter that height and we calculate each ramp's incline from its length. A longer ramp makes a gentler slope.

Older dogs and dogs with sore joints usually do better on a gentler slope. Your vet can tell you what's right for your dog.

Questions people ask

What is a good angle for a dog ramp?

We call 18° or less gentle, up to 22° moderate and up to 26° steeper. These are our own bands for comparing ramps, not veterinary advice. Ask your vet what suits your dog.

Why don't ramp makers list the angle?

The angle changes with the height, so one number wouldn't fit every bed or car. We calculate it from the ramp's length and your height instead.

Which dog ramps work for a pickup truck?

At 34 inches and up, even an 8 ft ramp sits at about 21° to 22°, and most folding ramps are steeper than 26°. Enter your tailgate height to see each ramp's angle.

Should I get a folding or telescoping car ramp?

Folding ramps come longer in our list, up to 96 inches, and a longer ramp makes a gentler slope. Telescoping ramps slide to the length you need and store in a narrow shape. See folding vs telescoping.

Does a dog ramp need a non-slip surface?

Yes. The Dog Aging Project says a ramp should have very good gripping material, so your dog doesn't slide down it. We list each ramp's surface as the maker describes it.

Will my older dog use a ramp right away?

Not always. New gear can take some getting used to. If your dog has joint or back trouble, ask your vet whether a ramp suits them.
